Tiny Coffee Table

For a tiny home - 23.5in x 13in. Made from a family heirloom - sheet metal and secondhand quarter sawn oak.

My grandfather gifted me this small, ancient looking chest. The paint had long been worn off revealing the aged metal below, and the latches still worked, despite their dented and misshapen parts. But it wasn’t this outer shell he gifted me, the true gift was what he kept inside. A collection of wheat pennies he had obtained over the years. What a gift! An old chest filled with money, and I liked the box as much as the coins within. In time I decided to repurpose this beautiful piece as a small coffee table for Becca and myself. During the process of refurbishment, it became apparent my grandfather had built this box himself. I had known he worked with sheet metal from certain stories and by the tools I inherited.

It gave me great pleasure to discover the project I was working on had become a collaboration. I now cherish this piece as if we had built this in his garage together, chatting and drinking coffee among the smell of his full ash tray.
