Golden Hour Mezuzah
Walnut and Brass, can you beat it? Typically my designs have wood as the primary material and brass as an accent, this Mezuzah flips that around with the Mezuzah having a solid brass body and a wooden topper. For the smallest piece of this mezuzah (shown below) I go back and forth, at times making it from brass, and other times making it out of wood. Lets dive in and I’ll show you a video of the final piece and how these are made.
This mezuzah was originally designed in 2022, and at that time I was making it entirely with woodworking tools. This was possible becuase brass is such a soft metal. A plunge router served as my milling machine, and though dangerous, it produced accurate results. Since then, I have acquired a Sherline 2000 mill and a Milwaukee metal bandsaw with a Swag table. These tools have allowed me to work in a much safer and streamline process. But ultimately they are best for prototyping and in recent months I’ve outsourced the large brass part to a precision machine shop in Clyde, NC called Custom CNC.
The wooden topper is less than a half inch wide and one inch tall, this is a difficult piece to make but a router table with a micro fence adjuster is a huge help. The backer piece with our logo etched in is small enough for me to laser engrave in house, and I use a custom made metal stamp to put our business name, WINDTHROW, into the brass.
