Custom Wooden Ketubah

This ketubah is made of wood, it’s one of the few I’ve made here in the Windthrow shop. A ketubah is a Jewish marriage certificate, this one has three parts. A tree branch header, vows, and signature lines. A variety of tools were used to achieve the burnt/darkening affect. Once finalized the project was sealed with a protective coat of varnish and an appropriate pen was included for the bride and grooms signatures. This is a one of a kind wooden ketubah, I worked with the couple to bring their tree branch idea to life. View this link to see the wooden ketubah we offer in the shop. The two Hebrew phrases seen in the branches where first carved out with a mallet and chisel, then burned using a precise metal tool. A small blow torched allowed for a quick and fun method to accentuate shadows in the illustration, and as for the body copy below, it was etched using a laser. The wooden board is constructed of a plywood core and Maple veneer. This ensures the wood will remain flat for many years. The light grain of the maple allows for a stark contrast when burned and the results speak for themselves. See a short video below to watch the process.
